Naugatuck
Historical Society Receives Valuable Timepiece
The Naugatuck Historical Society (NHS) has received a
donation of a large wall clock designed and crafted by Naugatuck horologist Dana Blackwell, who also
co-founded the Naugatuck Historical Society and served as its first
president. The three-foot tall clock is described as an “eight-day banjo
timepiece set in a mahogany case with banded inlaid doors.”
Blackwell was vice president and design engineer of the
E. Howard Clock and Watch Company in
Waltham,
MA, and vice president, curator,
and horological consultant for the American Clock and Watch museum in Bristol, CT.
An early member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors
(NAWCC), he also served as second vice president of that organization.
In 1980, Blackwell co-authored a book, “Salem Bridge
Clocks,” which is still considered the most authoritative source of
information about this subject.
The clock now at NHS was purchased by Ron Peaker, a
clock collector and former
Naugatuck
resident, at a Fine Arts Auction in
New Hampshire. Peaker has donated three other
historic clocks to NHS in the past.
