ASSISTANT ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER
DEPARTMENT: Police Department
WORKING HOURS: Up to 19 hours per week
RATE OF PAY: $11.7912 per hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible for assisting the Municipal Animal Control Officer, Police Chief or his designee in administering the enforcement of local ordinances and State of Connecticut General Statutes relating to dogs and domestic animals in accordance with the law. Performs functions in accordance with relevant Connecticut General Statutes as found in State of Connecticut Department of Agriculture, Title 22 Agriculture, Domestic Animals and Naugatuck Police Department policies and procedures. Responsible for remaining informed and performing all functions in accordance with CGS 22-332d, 22-327, 22-331, 22-329, 22-366, 22-13, 22-415. Responds to complaints by making personal contact with the complainant or other parties involved. Notifies the Police Department Communications Center for all calls for service. Such complaints may include , but not limited to, roaming dogs, barking dogs, dog/cat bites and other incidents reported by the public and/pr others. Apprehends and impounds roaming, injured or mistreated dogs & notifies owners of stray, unlicensed dogs in a timely manner. Publishes legal notice of stray, unlicensed dogs. Transports injured dogs to veterinarian. Performs the required statutory investigative steps, including quarantine and testing, that must be taken when investigating a complaint of a bite or scratch to a human being from a dog, cat or other animal, including but not limited to, quarantines for dogs suspected of having rabies taking account necessary precautions. Prepares incident documentation in a timely manner; at a minimum, this includes case number, details of the nature of the complaint, complainant’s information and the location of the incident. Adhere to Department of Agriculture regulations relating to the daily cleaning processes for indoor/outdoor kennels. Shall promptly obey the legitimate orders of his/her supervisor, police supervisors or other members of the Department acting in a supervisory capacity. Assists in the overall operation of the Dog Pound as a contributing team member. May be required to assist other per diem employees in the performance of their duties when needed. Performs duties in a safe & conscientious manner. Performs other duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Animal Control Officer or Police Chief or his designee.

QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The qualified candidate will possess at least a High School Diploma or GED and have at least one (1) year experience working with dogs and other domestic animals in a professional setting or equivalent experience, training and education. Must posses and maintain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License. Must pass all background and criminal background screening to the satisfaction of the Police Chief. The ability to work nights & weekends is essential. Must have knowledge of Connecticut State Statues as found in Title 22, Department of Agriculture – Agriculture, Domestic Animals, relative to the treatment and control of animals (CGS 22-332d, 22-366, 22-13, 22-415, 22-327, 22-331, 22-329). Ability to work as part of a team and to work, follow instructions & exercise independent judgment. Ability to interact with co-workers, supervisor and general public with diplomacy and tact. Ability to thoroughly document incidents as required by the law and policies and procedures in a timely manner. Ability to utilize computer programs and enter documentation required.
